Kaieteur Sports – The Golden Jaguars dominated with a remarkable 4-1 victory over Cambodia last night at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as they kicked off their participation in the inaugural FIFA Series.
After a disappointing 0-1 loss to Cabo Verde in their opening match, Coach Jamaal Shabazz’s squad returned with determination against the lower-ranked Asian Football Confederation (AFC) team.
Shabazz opted for some changes in the starting line-up from the previous match against the Blue Sharks, introducing Nathan Ferguson, Kadell Daniel, and Jalen Jones in place of Daniel Wilson, Colin Nelson, and Deon Moore.
Joining the ranks were the likes of the wonder-kid Omari Glasgow, Liam Gordon, Jeremy Garrett, Curtez Kellman, Leo Lovell, Captain Elliot Bonds, Stephen Duke-McKenna, and goalkeeper Quillan Roberts.
In his post-match interview, Glasgow described the match as a rehearsal for their FIFA World Cup qualification journey, and the Chicago Fire forward certainly did more than just whet the palate of Golden Jaguars fans as he impressed with a brace.
Guyana initially struggled against Cambodia, but Glasgow quickly shifted the momentum by converting a beautiful header in the 20th minute.
A perfectly placed cross from Daniel allowed the Concacaf Nations League top scorer to defy gravity and head home his 15th international goal for Guyana in his 22nd appearance for the Golden Jaguars.
And he wasn’t done yet.
Sieng Chanthea managed to equalize for Cambodia after winning a chase for the ball against Kellman in defence and facing Roberts one-on-one to convert his effort.
However, Chanthea’s moment was short-lived as Jones was fouled in the penalty area, prompting the referee to point to the spot.
The team relied on their most in-form player, Glasgow, to take the kick, and the Beterverwagting (BV) youth made no mistakes in slotting the ball into the net.
Glasgow’s successful penalty increased his international goal tally to 16, leaving him just two goals shy of tying Nigel Codrington’s all-time record.
Behind Glasgow, Duke-McKenna, and Gordon, Guyana created numerous opportunities, but it was Lovell who extended their lead to 3-1 in the 80th minute.
After Moore’s shot on goal was saved by the keeper, the rebound fell into the path of Lovell, who clinically struck the ball into the net for his second international goal.
Second half, substitute Ryan Khedoo, marked his first senior international goal after being found by Bonds, as he controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed it home with his right foot to secure a 4-1 victory and sealing Guyana’s comprehensive performance.
After the game, Bonds commended the team’s display of capabilities and expressed satisfaction with ending their time in Saudi Arabia with a win.
Glasgow highlighted Guyana’s upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers starting on June 6 against Panama in Panama City, emphasizing their serious approach to the match against Cambodia and their commitment to executing the coaches’ strategies.
