I commend the Editorial in Stabroek, News Friday, March 22, 2024 titled “Eteringbang security” as necessary reading and digestion by the powers that be and every concerned patriot.
Of course, there is the boast in the media of a high profile visit by the US CIA Director and other top brass. The sword of Damocles hangs over the head of Guyanese miners and their families operating in parts of the Cuyuni River. I have spoken with people seeking to make a living in this area and the situation is dire, dangerous and debilitating
The solution requires persons in control of the Administration to have a vision and to take necessary steps to secure the integrity of the Cuyuni area and the Essequibo. Short time proposals to encourage Venezuelans, the good and bad, constitute an act of stupidity which is already having a backfiring effect. No band-aid or apparently politically motivated solution would work. Everywhere a sane and sensitive state must ensure that the Immigration Policy must discriminate against a dense, shady character.
I have earlier recommended to persons in authority that they need to implement proposals contained in a document titled “Defence in Depth,” perhaps gathering cobwebs in some Government Office. The few Government persons I have spoken to behave and react in a manner which suggest that any recommended earlier is without giving reasons unacceptable. Folly at its highest level.
If the Government cares for the residents of Cuyuni and Essequibo, they would examine the recommendations of Defence in Depth and act with courage to prevent bedlam and ultimately loss of our patrimony of 83,000 sq miles.
Some of us can do no more than plead for wisdom and for humility so that our children and grandchildren benefit from God’s bounty.
