I compliment your paper for informative down to earth journalism and its balance in carrying commentaries, letters, editorials, and other opinions from all sections of society – those for and or against the government and the opposition and those who are unaligned politically. I note that you carried commentaries or epistles of individuals who are your critics and who have had nothing good to say about the paper and its publisher. I also read article for and against the oil giants and the contract. Your balanced journalism upset many but some of those who confessed their dislike for the publisher and KN praise your fairness, the latter missing in several other media houses. Allowing all views is proliferate is good, unbiased, fair journalism. That is what I learned in my first English writing class in college some 47 years ago.
I thank you for coverage of important issues, several local interest stories, and so many newsworthy events without which the public would be in the dark or uniformed. You provided coverage of events of ordinary folks, and you also have allowed an avenue for the meek, weak, and lower rungs of society to be seen in the media. Thank you for being such a strong, independent voice for the public.
Your newspaper stands out for balanced journalism, publishing comments for and against on all issues. You also respect the journalistic principle of “a right to reply” by the person or entity against which or who was mentioned in a missive. And your newspaper also provides space on all issues and newsworthy matters.
I know your paper has been harassed and intimidated with a litany of lawsuits and many people would like to have your paper shut down because you exposed their transgressions. You were dragged before the court innumerable times. But you persevered even when you lost costly suits. Most of those lawsuits would be dismissed in the USA where the court allows unfettered free speech. It is almost impossible to win lawsuits relating to free speech even when the media erred and was clearly at fault. Regrettably, in Guyana, the judiciary does not make judgments supportive of an open press free to criticize public figures and government agencies as in USA. The judiciary has not been very supportive in institutionalizing an absolute free press as in USA.
Your paper deserves recognition, thanks for your commitment to bringing to the public vital information and informed opinions they may not get in other papers. I notice many of the articles and opinions you published are not found elsewhere. The public is grateful that there is such a strong, courageous voice in our nation, allowing people, regardless of political affiliation, to speak her or his mind and for allowing the lower sections of society to also be in the media.
Yours truly,
Dr. Vishnu Bisram
