Kaieteur News – There is a saying that says ‘A little encouragement goes a long way’. And this is certainly happening for 33-year-old Nekeshia Phillips, who back in 2023 was encouraged by her family to take her culinary skills to the next level.
Phillips who hails from Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD) is the proud owner of a catering and baking business called ‘Heavenly Crumbs Cakes N Treats’ which was birthed in April 2023.
In a recent exclusive interview with The Waterfalls, Phillips said what inspired her to launch this business venture was her deep passion and love for culinary arts and cake decorating. These skills, she further perfected after completing all her short courses in 2023 at the Carnegie School of Home Economics.
“After completing Carnegie I was encouraged by many. But mainly my husband to start doing what I love and that is how my business journey began,” she recalled.
Her business, she said is about creating cakes and delicious gourmet pastries. According to Phillips, when she initially started, she began making homemade cupcakes, cinnamon rolls and pastries, then introduced cake art to her menu.
Still building and developing on her services, the young woman shared that being in the realm of business within one year; the support has been growing steadily with the encouraging feedback from her customers.
She went on to state that even though there is great support, there were also challenges along the way. For her, the challenges she faced as a small business owner mostly had to do with the unavailability of affordable quality packages and supplies in Guyana. She managed to get past this by saying, “I would source the items I need and have them shipped in.”
Accepting that she would sometimes face challenges with her business, Phillips said she would not let it discourage her from achieving her long-term goals.
When asked what her future goals are for ‘Heavenly Crumbs Cakes N Treats’ she related the goal is to one day open her storefront. Also, she said she wants to further gain more knowledge on different cuisines to expand her menu.
Meanwhile, Phillips believes that young entrepreneurs open new opportunities for others in society. She told this magazine “The roles young entrepreneurs play in society would be eliminating poverty in local areas by creating jobs for people to improve their financial situation.”
She expressed also that the government can play a significant role in enabling young entrepreneurship by providing funding, resources and regular support to new businesses. Also, they can offer tax incentives or other benefits that can boost entrepreneurship in Guyana, she suggested.
