His Excellency the Great Dr. Cheddi Jagan said, “We (CARICOM Heads of Governments) must set our face sternly against corruption and extravagance. We cannot have a Cadillac-style living with donkey-cart economies. Our leaders must set the example of democratic, accountable, clean and lean governance and efficient governance.” 1992 (Reference: Cheddi Jagan Research Centre).
In honour of his memory we must cleanse our government of corruption, we must ensure that our leaders are held accountable for their actions and we must avoid wasteful spending. A government that holds itself accountable does not delay the course of Justice, does not turn a blind eye to corruption in its midst, and does not shield its members from prosecution. In the spirit of our great leader we must not be hesitant in addressing the needs of our workers and the needs of our people. Both young and old should be able to live in a homeland that is prosperous, safe and filled with opportunities that allow our people to never be impoverished again. We must continue to embrace the Unions that have strengthened us over the years and we must respect our workers.
His Excellency’s patience has taught us the importance of holding fast to our principles and to never allow greed to change our path. Efficient, clean and lean governance does not overpay for services, does not take unnecessary risks to our economy, does not waste medicine bought, does not overspend on infrastructure, and does not allow the filth of corruption to take root. Roads for fancy cars and dirty water coming into our homes is not the way of the Father of Our Nation. We must shun extravagance, and we must set clear and appropriate priorities for the benefit of our people. His Excellency Dr. Cheddi Jagan said it best when he was alive, “Our Leaders must set the example”.
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
