Kaieteur Sports – As time ticks on his career, national goalkeeper Akel Clarke has embarked on a journey that paves the way for his life after he hangs up his gloves and steps away from playing the ‘beautiful game.’
Clarke, 35, currently playing for Slingerz FC, has introduced his ‘3ZRO by Akel’ clothing brand, offering both sports and casual leisurewear.
He said the name 3ZRO holds special significance, stating that “It represents my first professional number (30), a symbol of my journey and the milestones I achieved. Through my brand, my aim is to inspire aspiring goalkeepers and athletes to chase their dreams relentlessly, just as I did.”
“My journey as a professional goalkeeper is one filled with dedication, passion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. From humble beginnings to establishing my brand ‘3ZR0 by Akel’ in 2018, I would say my story is one of determination and hard work,” Clarke shared.
Clarke debuted for the Golden Jaguars in 2011 as the starting keeper in a friendly against Barbados and has since been the country’s preferred goalkeeper.
He played a pivotal role in leading Guyana to qualify for the 2019 Gold Cup, starting in the country’s opening game against the USA.
Clarke also competed in the Jamaica Premier League with Mount Pleasant Football Academy.
His love for football and goalkeeping began at a young age, showcasing exceptional talent and a natural ability to stop shots, catching the attention of coaches.
Progressing through various youth teams, his skills continued to develop, and he soon realized his dream of becoming a professional goalkeeper was within reach.
After starting with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Clarke moved to Trinidad and Tobago, where he played for St Ann’s Rangers, North East Stars, and Central FC in the country’s Professional League.
“In my pursuit of professional success, I faced numerous challenges and setbacks. I encountered tough competition, experienced injuries, and had moments of self-doubt. However, these obstacles only fuelled my determination to improve and prove myself on the field,” he added.
According to Clarke, after many years of hard work and perseverance, “I finally got my breakthrough. I signed my first professional contract, marking the beginning of a new chapter in my career. It was during this time that I decided to create my own brand, 3ZR0 by Akel.”
With 3ZRO, Clarke said he’s striving to provide high-quality goalkeeper apparel and equipment, designed by a professional goalkeeper for his fellow goalkeepers, “I understand the unique needs and challenges faced by those in my position and aim to create products that enhance their performance and comfort.”
Looking back, he believes that his journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief, pointing out that he’s dedicated to his craft and the creation of his brand, 3ZRO, exemplifying his commitment to helping others reach their full potential.
“As I continue to excel on the field and expand my brand, I greatly appreciate the support I have received thus far from players, fellow goalkeepers, and fans of the sport. Whether you’re a goalkeeper or simply someone who wants to show support, wearing 3ZRO by Akel apparel or using my products is a meaningful way to demonstrate admiration for my journey and the values the brand represents,” Clarke concluded.
