Kaieteur Sports – At the start of the match, Windies knew they had to win this match to ensure a final standing of 1st or 2nd in their pool but that was not to be as Wales put in a sterling performance to come out on top of an exciting match.
Wales won the toss and as expected, chose to bat on another even track. They started very cautiously and lost 2 wickets by the 9th over with just 30 runs on the board. Thereafter, opener Neil Williams found a useful ally in Stuart Carpenter where they put together 120 runs for the 3rd wicket before Neil got out for 41. Powell then joined Carpenter and they put together a useful 46 run partnership. Carpenter struck a wonderful century, 101 off 90 balls with 9 boundaries & 3 maximums. Wales innings closed at 264 for 5 wickets. Bowling for the Windies, Boyke had 2 for 24 and Keith Seale took 2 for 41.
In reply, Windies started very positively even though they lost Mukesh Sookram in the first over. Deyal joined Mike Heeralall and they put together 57 in 11 overs before Mike threw his wicket away just when he was looking well set. Deyal departed very soon after at 65 for 3 after himself and Roy Singh got bogged down for a few overs and were unable to get the ball off the square. Roy made just 14 off 41 balls to be 4th person out at 96, then 3 other quick wickets – Richard Sieuchan for 24 @118, Zamin Amin at 131 (14). When Keith Seale got out at 141 for 7 very few persons thought that West Indies would have gotten to 200 much less to challenge the score to win. Emmerson Jordan and Tony Boyke had other plans as they put together 70 runs in 7.5 overs before Boyke departed.
Jordan was then joined by Ramsingh where they put together 39 runs in 3.1 overs with Ramsingh contributing 26 (3 @4s and 1 @ 6). Needing 12 runs in the final over, Harvey got a single off the 1st ball to give Jordan the strike but he was caught at the mid-wicket boundary attempting a maximum. Jordan finished on a masterful 42 with 2 @ 4s and 3 maximums. Richard Harris, Mark Davies and C Hudson each took 2 wickets to strangle the West Indians.
