Kaieteur Sports – The Wakenaam Cricket Academy in collaboration with the Wakenaam Cricket Committee has recognised the achievement of its youth cricketers for the year 2023.
At a simple awards ceremony held recently at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground, the young cricketers were each given a token of appreciation, while the WCC also recognised several former players for their contribution to the game on the island.
Cricket Journalist Zaheer Mohamed welcomed those present and congratulated the players. He encouraged them to remain committed and stressed the importance of discipline. Mohamed who is also a fully qualified umpire and a level 2 coach, urged the WCC to focus more on the longer version of the game and touched on the importance of cricket at the grassroots level. He told the youths that for them to succeed, their desire for success should be greater than their fear of failure while encouraging the business community to render assistance.
WCC Secretary Nazeer Mohamed gave an overview of the tournaments that were organised by the committee for the year and congratulated the successful teams and players. WCC Chairman Khemraj Surujpaul also congratulated the outstanding players and teams and said that the committee will be looking to stage more tournaments in the coming year for the junior and senior cricketers. He urged the parents to support their children and noted that they now have an academy system that helps to unearth talent.
Former player and Chairman of the WCC Lennie Mohamed spoke about the history of the game on the island while former Good Success Sports Club Captian Mustak Mohamed briefly recalled his playing days on the island, and touched on the history of the Wakenaam Community Centre ground.
Among the players that were recognised are Bomesh Lall who copped the MVP prize in the Guyana Cricket Board 2023 Inter county U13 tournament, Justin Dowlin and Aarav Sukram. The trio were instrumental in Essequibo winning the title with Dowlin winning the man-of-the-match prize against Berbice. Both Dowlin and Lall represented Guyana U13 against host Trinidad and Tobago U13; the Guyanese won that series.
Others were Promising left-arm spinner Golcharran Chulai, one of the leading wicket-takers in the Regional U17 tournament in 2023. Chulai was also invited to the West Indies youth camp in Antigua and is currently training the Guyana Harpy Eagles, Gladewin Henry Jr., Shahid Mohamed, Nazaam Mohamed, Trivel Evans, Tomesh Persaud, Mohandass Surujpaul, Devendra Hansraj, Dennis Crossman, Jeremiah Melville, Jonathan Barry, Aiden Mohamed, Mikel Retemiah, national female cricketer Cyanna Retemiah, Ramesh Ramnarine, Kumesh Sudin, Verendra Pooran and Khemol Harackram.
Former Players that were recognised are Lennie Mohamed, Colin Ferguson, Zully Mohamed, Azweem Mohamed and Kamzan Zaman.
Among the U19 tournaments that were played on the island for 2023 were the New Doctor’s Clinic and Untouchable Sounds. The WCC also hosted several senior T20 tournaments in 2023 while the committee in association with the Wakenaam Cricket Academy will bowl off an U23 40-over tournament shortly. Additionally, the Farmer’s T20 Cup will continue today (Sunday).
