Kaieteur News – During his budget presentation on Friday, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, revealed crucial developments in the judicial sector for this year.
Among the notable developments is the appointment of 10 magistrates and 15 judges set for 2024.
The Attorney General disclosed that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has been appointed, paving the way for a series of significant changes.
He said, “Appointments are going to be made, six justices of appeal will be appointed, nine Puisne judges will be appointed to the High Court, two Commissioners of title will be appointed and 10 magistrates will be appointed bringing the total magistrates to 29. A new post of Deputy Chief Magistrate has been created to accommodate large intake of cases.”
Highlighting recent infrastructural developments, Nandlall outlined the inauguration of a $263 million Magistrate’s Court in Vigilance, East Coast of Demerara, on August 16, 2023. Two days later, on August 18, 2023, ground was broken for the construction of a 303.9 million Magistrate’s Court at Timehri, marking the first such facility in the country’s history at that location. The Attorney General also noted the commencement of the construction for a new $388.8 million Magistrate’s Court at Friendship on the East Bank of Demerara, another historic milestone for the nation.
Notably, he highlighted that a pilot case management system was launched on December 6, 2023, for the Magistrate Court system.
This initiative aims to introduce electronic filing and case management across the magistrate courts, promising increased efficiency and modernization.
