Kaieteur Sports – The 2024 calendar of chess tournaments continues. The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) in partnership with MIDWAY Specialty Care is running off the One-Day National Under-14 Championship today, Saturday January 27 at Queen’s College with seven exciting rounds in the open and female categories.
Junior chess players from across several schools are expected to participate. Players will be given 20 minutes plus 5 seconds increment per round in the Swiss System competition.
Approximately 21 boys and 18 girls are expected to participate.
Players from the just concluded Under-12 championships are also expected to enter and display their mental prowess as well. Current Under12 (Open winners) Jeremy Cole, Aquilani Swaminadha, Vir Narine and (Girls winners) Kataleya Sam, Saura Ruplall, Chelsea Harrison will be rivaling for the Under 14 title.
Trophies will be presented to the winners in the respective Open and Girls category for first second and third positions.
Winners in the best Under 12 and Under 10 divisions in the Open and Girls section will also be recognized.
The tournaments are also geared at strengthening the players’ confidence and strategy as they move up the ladder to more advanced tournament categories.
