Kaieteur Sports – Georgetown Panthers continued to pick off the competition while WDCA Jaguars earned a hard-fought victory as part of yesterday’s double-header played at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Ground.
After restricting the Eagles to sub-par 104 all out in 18.2 overs, thanks to spin twins Devon Lord (4-17) and Steven Sankar (3-23) who mopped up the majority of the batsmen during their brilliant spells. Former Guyana all-rounder Christopher Barnwell led the seamers with classy figures of 2-12.
MVP from the last game Rickey Sargent (28×24) hit 4 fours and a six to finish as the top scorer, with Damian Vantull (19), Shamar Yearwood (12) and Leon Swammy (12); capping off an ordinary batting exhibition from East Bank.
Almost playing at the same pace while match scores, Raymon Perez (43*) and a returning Barnwell (43*) who had a superb day on his home turf ground, clobbered their team to an emphatic win, as Georgetown rushed to 105-1 in just 7.5 overs.
In-form opener Perez was ultra-aggressive hitting three fours and four sixes in his 18-ball knock while Barnwell, who was adjudged match MVP, finished with similar boundary stats, but required 24 balls.
Skipper Akshaya Persaud smashed a brisk 43 off 27 with 5 big sixes and a four. Sheldon Alexander hit 43 off 27 and mirrored similar stats to that of Persaud’s, adding 70 with Richie Looknauth (26).
Opener Ushardeva Balgobin, who gave West Demerara a brisk start with his 29 from 19 (3×4 2×6), provided all the extra momentum alongside Persaud, as the pair shared a foundation 61-run partnership which all laid the platform for the scary 186 all out which they made in 19 overs.
UDCA bowling was led by Nicholas Lawson who was a bit expensive, going for 50 but returned 4 wickets. Shaquille Williams supported almost evenly with 3-17.
Despite winning the MVP award in a losing effort, Daniel Ross stole the show for a moment, blasting a 25-ball, unbeaten 55 with 5 fours and a trio of sixes, batting at number 7.
His lower-order fightback, included an 85-run partnership with from Romeo Deonarain (31*), opener Alvin Mohabir (35) and Williams who returned to score 20, toiled but the almost 200-run target was daunting and the Scorpions folded for 169 in 20 overs.
In the end, the WDCA duo Kishaun Tracy grabbed 2-33) and Mahendra Dhanpaul (2-29) had gold outings which in turn aided their team’s win.
Shaun Massiah presents GCA Panthers all-rounder Chris Barnwell with the Man-of-the-match trophy following yesterday’s win.
