Kaieteur Sports – President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Bissoondyal Singh lauded West Indies newest pace prospect, Shamar Joseph ahead of his upcoming debut against Australia, while throwing support behind out-of-favor Windies batsman, Shimron Hetmyer.
Singh, during a recent Zoom interview with Sportsmax TV hailed the rookie speedster Joseph for his rocket-like year, having won the 2023 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title with the Guyana Amazon Warriors last year, before rocketing his way onto the international scene with the West Indies A team versus South Africa.
Among his accolades, the most recent being among the uncapped bunch of players who are currently preparing for their battle with the Australians. He snapped up 2-28 in his first innings as the Windies played to a draw against the Cricket Australia XI during their recent warm up match at Adelaide.
Speaking on Joseph’s progress, GCB president Singh, who has thrown all his support behind the pacer, spoke highly of his growth which was berthed last October during the CWI Regional 50-Over season.
During his interview with the Sportsmax TV crew, Singh spoke on seeing the speedster for the first time and being immediately impressed, back in his days as an Emerging player.
The GCB president went on to explain that he was star-struck by the pacer’s approach to cricket despite being a rookie, stating that his form, raw talent and his overall fitness stood out as key qualities of being a professional cricketer.
The GCB boss believed that it was, “Just a matter of time” before Joseph could fully unleash his full potential as a pure fast-bowler and possibly continue the West Indies tradition of being among cricket world’s hubs for producing elite pacers.
He added that his own personal regime of maintaining his fitness, discipline while eating like a professional athlete; are among traits which will keep the 23 year-old in the setup, further adding that once the opportunities are provided he is confident that Joseph will make a big impact on the international circuit.
Speaking on Joseph’s fast-progression, having just played a handful of games for Guyana, Singh said the pacer was a great find for his country and now West Indies, adding that the young cricketer is a great communicator and is constantly seeking to improve on his mistakes while perfecting his craft.
Star batsman Shimron Hetmyer was left out of both squads for the Aussie series but Singh stated that he hoped the young left-hander, who he dubbed a ‘Class Act’, could quickly overcome what he believed is a bad patch in his career and resume his career as one of the top young batters in the Windies setup.
