The perspective offered in the article by a former CWI director in our local media, headlined ‘US cricket market a threat to the future of CWI – former director’ (News Room Jan 8), offers a better understanding as to why Jamaica decided not to be a part of hosting matches in the ICC T20 World Cup, being jointly hosted by USA and WI and to be played in June.
From the schedule of matches, it was gleaned the superpower of T20 cricket India, will play all of its group matches in the US, while cricket’s biggest rivalry between India and Pakistan will duel in New York. It seems there are few marquee games scheduled for the Caribbean. All the big names, it is perceived, are playing in the US. This has to be seen as a disservice and disappointment to West Indian fans.
For the Guyana leg of the tournament, WI is in Group C, its clash with PNG, (no underdogs) should be interesting as would be the NZ/Afghanistan encounter. Is this the compromise CWI had to subject itself and fans to with ICC, in order to get onto the shared hosting, with a superpower, of this mega cricket event?
Sincerely,
Shamshun Mohamed
