Using taxpayers’ money to prop up State Media gives them an unfair advantage against the free and independent media. As well as because they are receiving taxpayers’ monies, they feel beholden to the Government of the day and tend to tow the party line.
Serious consideration needs to be given to the privatization of these State Media. While some would say that Guyana needs State Media to promote the good work that the Government of the day is doing, I would like to point out that another Government, with Machiavellian designs, can and do misuse State Media.
Guyana is a democracy. The Government of the day does not need the media to tell it how good it is looking. What it needs from the media is an honest and constructive analysis of its performance, and failings, in Government. The media, for its part, needs to hold all stakeholders accountable and not just the Government of the day.
Sincerely,
Sean Ori
