It was belatedly reported that the opposition declined an invitation to be part of Guyana’s delegation to the SVG meeting citing the lack of an agenda (SN Dec 15). Now one of its sitting MPs has taken exception to certain phrasing of paragraph nine of the joint Declaration.
While an agenda would have been ideal and there may be relevance to the MP’s observation and concern, it is for this reason, opting out should not have been an option. Having railed about being sidelined from the national agenda on the awareness campaign, here was an opportunity to come together in being part of crafting Guyana’s inputs into the Declaration. The opportunity was missed but perhaps, not entirely lost. Careful scrutiny and monitoring of the Declaration to ensure its terms are being enforced and respected are essential. The opposition can play its part.
Your faithfully,
Shamshun Mohamed
