BREAKING NEWS: Cops struck down at roadblock – one dead, other critical

Kaieteur News – A female police officer died on Thursday night while her colleague was critically injured after an errant driver drove through a roadblock in front of the Beterverwagting Police Station on the East Coast of Demerara.

Dead is Constable Abel who died at the scene; the woman lost her left leg in the accident. Another police office, Inspector Castello, was also struck down by the errant motorist. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in a critical condition.

According to reports, shortly before 23:00hrs on Thursday, the two officers were performing traffic duties in front of the police station when they were struck down by the car whose driver drove through the red traffic light.

After running over the police officers, the car collided with two other vehicles which the police had pulled over. Reports are that the errant driver was drunk; he was promptly detained by the police.

The accident resulted in a traffic build-up and the police were forced to re-route traffic through the Railway Embankment Road as the police assessed the scene.
