CWI CG United Super50 Cup Semi-Final 1…Guyana Harpy Eagles vs. Trinidad & Tobago Red Force
Kaieteur Sports – The storied, more than decade-long skirmish between Guyana and their long-time rivals Trinidad & Tobago will take center stage yet again, this time with both teams seeking a direct path to this Saturday’s Super50 Cup final; when they lock horns in today’s Day/Night match at Tarouba.
The Red Force will enter this match with a number of huge advantages against Guyana; one of those bonuses is the fact that they have outplayed Guyana in the last five battles. While Guyana has 3 wins, Trinidad managed to get the better of their foes 4 out of the 5 times they played.
Harpy Eagles could also bank on the fact that when these teams, just slightly tweaked with a few overseas players but for the most parts, the countrymen, met a few months ago in the CPL, Guyana managed to overcome their demons and beat the Twin Island Republic team and lift the title.
Now with just a few more overs added and more of the local players getting time in the middle, the two sides should provide, possibly, the more entertaining of the two semi-final games. Batting could be the difference-maker in this bout, as both teams will favor their chances to come out gunning.
T&T skipper Darren Bravo has been in good touch as one of the leading run-scores this season, second behind Justin Greaves, but could easily pass the Leewards batsman especially coming off his career-best hundred this past Sunday.
All-rounder Sherfane Rutherford stood out for the Eagles during the competition, leading the batting charts with 248 runs including a career-best 105 not out along with 70-odd a few matches ago to help his team gain enough points to reach into the semis.
Shimron Hetymer and Tagenarine Chanderpaul hit twin fifties in the crucial game against Jamaica which was the final kick needed to reach this far. With the two West Indies batters finding form at the right time, Guyana will still need more from their young brigade in; Kemol Savory, Tevin Imlach, Kevlon Anderson, Richie Looknauth and those who will need to play a role with the bat come today.
The home team could easily match or even slightly better the Eagles in the batting department, given the form of opener Kjorn Ottley, the 4th leading run-scorer in the tournament with 259 runs under his belt and a magical 134* to serve as a reminder of his class.
Ottley’s batting form coupled with that of Bravo, Nicholas Pooran, Jason Mohammed, all-rounder Yannick Cariah and opener Tion Webster, the Red Force could easily put their rivals under some pressure should they fail to make early inroads.
All season the Eagles have been bowling like champs, as most have continued to utilize their form from summer’s CPL where a number of the Eagles players past and present have represented the Guyana Amazon Warriors franchise.
With Romario Shepherd and Ronsford Beaton, two of the Amazon Warriors champs out of the tourney, two more CPL champs in Gudakesh Motie and Kevin Sinclair have taken over the responsibility of providing wickets, alongside the veteran Veerasammy Permaul.
The pair of spinners continues to add wickets to their collection with Sinclair entering the game as the Eagles leading wicket-taker with 14 victims. Permaul and Motie are both tied on 11 apiece, 5 wickets away from joining Sunil Narine and 3 others who head up the column with 16 wickets each.
The trio of spinners, along with the return of fast-bowler Niall Smith and possibly a few overs of pace from Rutherford is enough to keep the Trinidadians at bay. Leading wicket-taker by statistics, Narine and his teammate Cariah, who also has 16 wickets, have been causing problems all season, making them the most dangerous pair of spinners in this battle.
West Indies left-arm-spinner Akeal Hosein grabbed 3-30 on Sunday to help dismantle Barbados Pride and could factor into Bravo’s plans yet again as part of the 3-amn spin team, which will match that of the Harpy Eagles. Action bowls off at 13:00h.
