Kaieteur Sports – Guyanese chess player Sasha Shariff recently participated in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Women’s Chess Championship held in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Despite being one of the lower-ranked players, Shariff showcased her talent by defeating top female players from Honduras and Puerto Rico, impressively outperforming her current FIDE ranking by 172 points.
One of her standout victories came against Gabriela Vera Perez from Puerto Rico, a match that lasted just twenty moves. Shariff executed a clever game plan to counter her opponent’s Sicilian opening, eventually trapping her opponent and securing a win. In another game against Yorelis Otero from Puerto Rico, Shariff displayed strong end-game play, ultimately leading to Otero’s resignation.
Shariff’s performance at the championship has established her as one of the region’s top young female chess talents. At just twenty years old, her future in the sport appears promising. The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) is pleased with her performance and encourages her to continue training for success in upcoming international tournaments.
Sasha Shariff however, expressed her gratitude for the tournament experience, emphasizing how it enriched her skills and strategies through encounters with high-level players. She also thanked the GCF for their sponsorship and hopes to see increased female participation in such tournaments.
Additionally, the GCF is actively providing training to chess players, with top female players receiving coaching from WGM Martha Fierro to prepare for the Chess Olympiad in Hungary in September 2024. Training for the Open team for the Olympiad will also begin soon with the assistance of an international coach.
The President of the GCF, Anand Raghunauth, reiterated the federation’s commitment to providing opportunities for training and development, allowing players to compete abroad, earn titles, and gain valuable experience against renowned chess players.
