Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday commissioned the new $84M Arthurville Primary School, located on the Wakenaam Island, Region Three.
Ali was joined by Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand along with other government officials. In his remarks the President congratulated the Education Ministry and everyone who played a part in having the new building, noting that the school will add “to giving you the best possible education that we as a country and as a people can give you.”
The President told children present that the reason the government is investing in not only the education sector but other sectors as well, is so that they build the “best possible future” for them. “We are going to build a future that is a prosperous one in which you are better off than today, one in which you fully accomplish your aspirations,” he added.
The Head of State mentioned too that through the Men on a Mission programme they are going to invest some $2.5 million into having a play ground for students and a space to host community engagement with the residents.
Manickchand for her part told residents and parents not to look at the new school as just a building, but as a place where their children would have the opportunity to live out their full potential. “As we commission this school, see it more than a building, it’s a beautiful building, we try very hard to bring it in on time and quickly, but what the President is giving you here today is hope, he is giving you the opportunity to make sure these children are better than all of us, the opportunity to make sure that they can live their full lives to their full potential. That is what is being giving here, the opportunity to these children to become whatever it is they want to become but for, to have a life of plenty, not have a life of want, to be able to participate fully all over Guyana,” she elaborated.
Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Chairman of Region Three, Ishan Ayube noted that the school has been in a state of disrepair for years. He said he had advocated for a new building during his tenure as the Regional Vice Chairman. “I can recall vividly when I was the Regional Vice Chairman and on my visits on this island my attention was always drawn to the Arthurville Primary School, and when I look at the dilapidated state of that school in 2016, 2017, 2018,2019, and 2020, I often advocated at that time that we need a new school, in Athrurville and then it fall on deaf ear,” the Regional Chairman explained.
He noted that this all changed when the new government came into office and the project for a new building came on stream. “It shows a commitment of this government that our children are in a safe environment and an environment that is conducive to disseminate education,” he added. The $84,944,136 contract for the school was awarded to Mohammed Sidique Ramson Contracting Services.
