Kaieteur Sports – The 2023 Farfan and Mendes/Woodpecker Products First Division Hockey Leagues carried on with their action-packed matches this past Sunday at the National Stadium in Providence. Two exhilarating games marked the culmination of the competition’s round stages. GBTI GCC faced off against Saints in the Women’s division, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory, while in the Men’s category, Saints triumphed over Pepsi Hikers with a score of 3-1.
In the women’s matchup between GBTI GCC and Saints, the game initially kicked off at a slow pace, with both teams entering the second period without any goals on the board. However, Abosaide Cadogon changed the game’s atmosphere by netting the first goal for her team in the 28th minute. Five minutes later, Alysa Xavier (33′) added to GCC’s lead by skillfully maneuvering past the Saints’ defense, extending their lead to 2-0. Saints managed to salvage a late goal courtesy of Claysa Bobb, but the final score favored GCC, ending at 2-1.
Turning to the Men’s division, Saints engaged in an intense battle against Pepsi Hikers, and their determination for victory was evident as they quickly established a 2-0 lead. Edmond Chinian (14′) and Quinn Tobin (19′) were the heroes behind these early goals for Saints. In response, the Hikers made an effort to mount a comeback, with Shane Samuels scoring a crucial goal in the 46th minute. However, Saints sealed the deal, with Chinian scoring again in the 55th minute, securing a late advantage and ultimately clinching the match with a final score of 3-1.
The excitement continues on Saturday, November 11th, starting at 2:00 pm at the same venue.
