Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate Boxing Championship
Kaieteur Sports – The 2023 Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate Boxing Championship concluded on Sunday at the National Gymnasium, located along Mandela Avenue. Terrence Poole and the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) Boxing Gym shone brightly, earning the Best Gym Award by dominating five weight classes and securing a total of five gold medals across the eleven weight categories.
The title of 2023 National Intermediate Best Boxer was proudly claimed by Septon Barton, a fighter out of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) boxing gym. Meanwhile, the coaching accolades were shared by FYF coach Ebert Blake and Guyana Police Force coach Dexter Marques, both being recognized with the Best Coach award.
The final night of the championship featured a robust lineup of 14 bouts, including eleven finals and three junior matches. In the opening bout of the card, the skillful young pugilist Ryan Rogers from FYF faced Shawn So bola of the Rose Hall Jammers Boxing Gym in the junior’s 54kg Bantamweight class. On the other hand, the talented FYF boxer Tiquan Sampson secured an easy victory in the Junior Light Welterweight 60kg matchup.
In the finals of the National Intermediate championship, Lincoln Murray from GDF claimed the 51kg Flyweight title, winning on points against FYF’s Wayne Castello. Wavell Messiah from GDF later succumbed to Julian Clarke, also from the GDF boxing gym, after three consecutive 8-count stands, leading to a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) victory for Clarke in the Bantamweight 54kg class.
Melroy McPherson emerged as the Featherweight 57kg champion by decisively defeating Ezekiel Persaud in the second round, as Persaud abandoned the fight early in the middle round. The hard-hitting Septon Barton from FYF dominated and out boxed the courageous Oswald Jewan from GDF. In another GDF face-off, Christopher Cummings emerged victorious over his gym mate Joseph Gardener, securing the Light Welterweight 63.5kg class title.
Rondell Captain from GDF and Travis Iverary from FYF secured the Welterweight 67kg and Light Middleweight 71kg titles, respectively. Captain triumphed in a split decision victory over Elliot Sinclair, while Iverary won his contest against Christopher Henry from GDF, who abandoned the match after receiving his third consecutive 8-count stand during the first round, with 1 minute and 32 seconds on the clock.
In the 75kg Middleweight final, Alex Butcher from GDF finished Orin Domingo, also from GDF, with a powerful left hook within the first round. Jevon Thomas from GDF and Malachi Clarke from GDF provided an entertaining match, with Thomas ultimately winning the Light Heavyweight championship by unanimous decision.
Meanwhile, the towering Hulman Bovell from the Police (POL) defeated Camara Chandelier from the Police (POL) to claim the Cruiserweight 86kg title, while Zidhan Wray stunned Ryan Harry (both from GDF) to secure the Super Heavyweight title, defeating Harry in just 23 seconds into the opening round.
