Kaieteur Sports – Region Five Head Teachers along with Head of the Priority Programme Saeed Zameen and Regional Education Officer Lallchand Sakik were joined by Nexgen Golf Academy Head Coach Aleem Hussain and his team of golf coaches for the region yesterday to commence golf as a PE subject on timetable in all Secondary schools.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education Priority Programme, Saeed Zameen expressed his gratitude to the Region and Head Teachers for their willingness to engage learners in the programme, “This gives me great pleasure to see the level of interest and enthusiasm from the highest levels and we are looking forward to seeing golf grow as a part of the Ministry’s push for every student to have been exposed to at least one sport.”
According to Mr. Salik, “we will fully support the Honourable Minister Priya Manikchand’s mandate to promote sport as one of the five priority areas and you can expect that Region Five will become a force to reckon with in golf.”
Teachers across Region 5 welcomed Golf to their classrooms on Friday as the GGA’s school program continues its growth across Guyana.
Donnette D’Andrade, Head Teacher for Rosignol Secondary welcomed the programme saying, “Rosignol Secondary has been the leading school in CSEC golf for the past two years thanks to Sir Kevon Jawahir and we are happy to see this programme being implemented across the region. We certainly welcome the competition but do not intend to give up our top position.”
Head Coach Aleem Hussain said, “Senior coaches Avinash Persaud and Vishal Dhanai, currently the top two highest ranked golfers in the country are overseeing the implementation of the program nationwide and as we expand this program to include the other regions, it is expected that more than 16,000 learners will be given an opportunity to play golf.”
Learners will also be given the opportunity to sign up for the LPGA Foundation programme which gives them access to scholarships and cash grants throughout the year.
