Kaieteur Sports – West Bank Demerara were crowned champions of the inaugural Region 3 softball Cricket League 50/50 competition which was contested on Sunday.
West Bank Demerara defeated East Bank Essequibo by 49 runs in the final at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. West Bank Demerara took first strike and posted 173-2 from their allotted 50 balls. J. Sampson struck 72 not out which included 10 fours while Wazim Hussain made 38 with six sixes, Greg Singh scored 34 including four sixes and Safraz Esau 15. Wazim Mohamed and Asif Hussain took one wicket each.
East Bank Essequibo were restricted for 124-2, in reply. Troy Drakes made 43 with one four and six sixes while Mohamed scored 33 which included four sixes. Hussain and Sampson took one wicket each.
Earlier, West Coast Demerara lost to West Bank Demerara but took third place after winning their game against Bonsika/Leguan Combined.
Chairman of the league, Imran Hussain congratulated the winners and thanked the sponsors, teams and fans for their support.
He said that this is an effort to get softball back on its feet in the region and that the tournament will continue on a regular basis. He noted the hard work put in by his fellow executive members in order to host a successful tournament and is extremely delighted.
