Kaieteur Sports – Guyana swim sprint star Delroy Tyrrell continues his dominance in college swimming in the United States by winning three gold medals and helping St. Rosé break the medley relay record.
Swimming against Bentley University, St Rose’s arch rival, Tyrrell and company wanted desperately to stop the bleeding of defeats that Bentley had inflicted on St. Rose in the recent past. Though Bentley has a much larger contingent of swimmers and can field four teams in any event, the men and women of St. Rose came within 30 points (estimate) of defeating Bentley.
The 13 event format meant that all swimmers can compete in three events including a relay. In effect, the meet may be described as a sprint meet.
However, for Guyana swim sprint king, it was more a duel meet. This was to be Delroy Tyrrell’s first big test of his college swimming. The duel was built around the 200 free, 50 backstroke in the 200 medley relay and the 100 backstroke. Tyrrell swam as ferociously as the Arapaima (Guyana’s largest freshwater fish).
Swimming out of lane 3 in the medley relay, Tyrrell started badly as a result of a shallow pool at Bentley, but quickly made gains and caught the Bentley backstroker (John Zhang) and out touched him in a time of 24.84 to Zhang’s 24.92.
The duel heated up in the 200 freestyle. Starting slowly and measuring his opponents, Tyrrell sprinted away from the field in the last 50 meters to touch the wall in a time of 1:48.93 seconds. This was an improvement from last weekend’s time of 1:50.93 in the same event.
Finally, the duel climaxed with the most anticipated event, the 100 backstroke. This was expected to be the clash of the second fastest 100 backstroker in the conference currently, Danny Lehr from Bentley and Tyrrell, the third ranked 100 backstroker in the conference. Strange things do happen in Sports. Danny Lehr was a no show. This didn’t deter Tyrrell who obliterated the field with time to enjoy a cup of ‘swank’ (lime juice or lemonade). He touched the wall first in 53.37 seconds missing the Bentley record by .10 seconds.
Tyrrell finished the meet with an impressive three races and three gold and a medley relay record. He won the high point trophy and was the only swimmer to win three golds.
Tyrrell’s next meet, will be in front of his home fans and he will be hoping to put on a show for the students of St. Rose.
