Kaieteur Sports – Shemar Britton and Chelsea Edghill showcased spirited performances during their journey at the Pan Am Games, but despite their impressive displays, they were unable to advance beyond the round-of-32 in the singles event in Santiago, Chile.
Britton, the highest-ranked player in the English-speaking Caribbean, faced a challenging 1-4 loss to Puerto Rican Daniel Gonzalez, who currently holds a global ranking of 97 by World Table Tennis.
In the match, Britton encountered a tough start, conceding the first three games 4-11, 8-11, 8-11, but he rallied back, securing the fourth game 11-6.
However, Gonzalez asserted his dominance in the final game, winning with a score of 3-11 to conclude the match.
Meanwhile, the Germany-based Edghill faced fellow Olympian, Yadira Silva, as the decorated Mexican dispatched the talented Guyanese paddler 4-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-4, 11-8).
The Pan Am Games, an integral part of the Olympic Qualification process for various events, draw the participation of the top-tier players in the Americas region, all converging for action in Chile.
Reflecting on his performance, Britton expressed that his Pan Am Games experience was an essential part of his sporting growth, stating “it was always a dream of mine to play at this level among the top 32 players within the entire Pan Am region; it’s just another step-up and another level to aspire to get to.”
“I made tremendous strides this year. I had a good Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, I had a good Pan Am qualifier…this year I was very active and I produced some good results.” Britton said.
Looking ahead, Britton pointed to the difficulty now balancing his studies at Hugh Wooding Law school in Trinidad and Tobago, “it’s very demand. But I still intend on representing Guyana to the best of my ability when I get the chance.”
Discussing his development, Britton emphasised the significance of continuing to play among the world’s top players while acknowledging that his aspiration to become an attorney-at-law will require some adjustments.
“This tournament falls at the bad time for me…during my month off (after returning from China), I’ve been at Hugh Wooding Law School, me and Chelsea (Edghill) separated so we didn’t get a chance to have as many practice but I’m going to come back stronger next year, hoping to qualify for Paris (Olympics),” Britton said.
