Kaieteur Sports – A number of Youth Groups on the East Coast of Demerara attached to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Saturday last participated in two football competitions.
The competitions, which were organised by the GPF Regional Division 4C (East Coast), were for U17 and U15 teams. It was played at the Buxton Community Center Ground for the Commander’s Cup.
The teams that competed were from Beterverwagting, Buxton, Melanie, Enmore, Golden Grove, Cove and John, Cane Grove, Ann’s Grove, and Mahaica.
The U17 competition saw defending champions Golden Grove Future Vision Football retaining their crown by securing a 1-0 victory over Beterverwagting Empowerment Youth Group.
Earlier in the opening encounter defending champions Golden Grove Future Vision Police Youth Group whipped Melanie Youth Group 5 -0 to get things rolling.
The next game went down to the wire with Beterverwagting squeezing past Buxton Achievers Youth Group on penalty kicks.
In another game Ann’s Grove United drubbed Regional Division 4C Scouts Group 8-0.
The semi-final between Ann’s Grove United Police Youth Group and Beterverwagting Empowerment Youth Group was an enthralling encounter which was decided on sudden death penalty kicks after full, extra time and regular penalty kicks fail to produce a result.
At the end of the allotted time, the score was 0-0. It was the Beterverwagting lads that held their nerves to emerge victorious and faced defending Champions, Golden Grove Future Vision Police Youth Group.
The ‘Under 15’ competition was won by the team from Melanie as they defeated Buxton Achievers Youth Group in the final.
At the end of the competition trophies and medals were presented to the winning and second placed teams as well as the Most Valuable Players.
Golden Grove received accolades for placing first in the U17 division. Second placed rewards were presented to Beterverwagting. Brian Wharton was adjudged the MVP.
In the U15 division, Melanie Youth Group was first and Buxton Achievers Youth Group took second place and was rewarded. Deshawn Williams was the MVP.
The activity was graced by the presence of Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Khali Pareshram and Deputy Commander Deputy Superintendent Jermaine Dufu among other senior officers.
They assisted in presenting trophies, medals and other accolades to the outstanding performers.
Footballs were donated to each team that participated in the competition while uniforms were presented to the U17 finalists.
