…as GWI pump breaks down
Kaieteur News – Residents of Karasabai in South Pakaraima District are calling on the Guyana Water Inc (GWI) to rectify an issue at the water pump that serves the community which has been out of service for the past two months.
Reports are that the pump, which was commissioned by the GWI in 2020, has malfunctioned and to date the agency has been unable to remedy the issue. An official of the GWI office at Lethem related to residents that he is unclear as regards a timeline when the issue would be rectified since the agency’s office at the border town does not have the requisite resources to fix the problem.
The issue has affected some 700 residents of the community as families have resorted to using water from hand dug wells while others are forced to fetch water from various sources. In addition, the Karasabai Nursery and Primary schools, Secondary department as well as the health centre, doctors’, nurses’ and teachers’ quarters have been affected by the water woes. Several businesspersons have related that they are forced to fetch water to their business places. Early in 2020, the GWI commissioned a $10M water supply system which was funded by the agency and the Regional Democratic Council of Region 9. The works at the project site entailed the drilling of a well to the depth of 100 metres, installation of 4 kilometers of distribution pipelines, 78 new service connections and the rehabilitation of the previously existing water supply system.
