Kaieteur Sports – The second leg in the Annual National Draughts competition was played last Sunday at the Transport Sports Club pavilion. Steve Bacchus with 23 points took the top spot with Aubrey Rowe second with 20 points. Esan Anderson amassed 19 points to take third, while Navin Meighbarran and Jiaram tied with 18 points each. Navin got the nod.
The competition began with Steve Bacchus placed an onslaught to George then Ulric Brathwaite accumulating 8 easy points and already poised to take the title. However, it wasn’t that easy. The next round he met with Jiaram who drew both matches. Then next he played Esan Anderson who derailed him.
However, with points from some later players gave him an outright win.
Before the start, President of the Association Mr. Jiaram addressed the players. He reminded that he would like to see the game played in the various communities throughout Guyana. Mr. Ivor English responded that as the president of both GFC and Transport Sports Club he would form a Draughts clubs in both locations. Mr. Lyndon Heywood promised to get the boys in America and Longden streets organised.
Mr. Jiaram said in doing so they can raise their own funds and organise tournaments with clubs playing clubs.
The competition was sponsored by YK Pawn Shop and Puran Waste management. Guyana Beverage Inc. was the thirst quencher.
