Kaieteur Sports – The sporting fraternity in Guyana, especially in cricket and entertainment, is in mourning following the sudden passing of former Inter County youth cricketer and athlete Jevaughn Stephen.
Stephen, 37, hails from Tucber Park, Berbice, Guyana died on Tuesday 17th at the New Amsterdam hospital following a brief period of illness. He was rushed to the hospital and died a few days after from complications.
Stephen, a multitalented athlete, participated in numerous sporting activities in his younger days. In the cricketing arena he played as a fast bowling all-rounder and represented Demerara at the U15 level whilst attending President’s College in that county.
The following year he was invited by the Berbice selectors to try out for his home county at the U17 level. He went on to play second and first division cricket in Berbice. He played for Police in first division level where he went on to captain to team at the first division level and also served as Administrator of the club.
He also played for Tucber Park. He also served the game at the administrative level rising to the rank of Vice President of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB).
He was champion athlete for President’s College on numerous occasions where he specialized in the 100, 200 and 400M events. He won the 400M at the National school athletics championship.
In the world of work he rose up the ranks rapidly, working at various agencies including the Bank, Courts Guyana Limited, St Francis Community Developers and rising to the level of Director of Regional Health Service of Region 6.
He quickly rose up the ranks in the political arena. He was also a senior politician with the Peoples National Congress reform, serving as the Party’s Region 6 Regional Chairman. He also served as Regional Councilor and was serving as a Councilor of the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council when he died.
In entertainment he was involved in all aspects. He helped to establish the CNA entertainment Company which rose to the top of the ladder in Berbice and brought quality entertainment to fans. He was the operator of the Sip Play entertainment spot in New Amsterdam. He was also into farming.
Always in the limelight, he fought tooth and nail as a representative but there was no love lost, being described as forgiving, humble, joyful, energetic, compassionate, friendly, kind hearted, willing among other sobriquets. He was hailed as a leader and a go getter in the many spheres of he was involved in.
As Director of the Regional Health Services Region 6, he was credited with employing dozens of young people.
At the time of his passing he was coordinator of the New Amsterdam Town Day Committee which is scheduled to be held in a few weeks.
