Kaieteur Sports – The Janet Jagan Birth Anniversary School Girls Windball Cricket tournament has officially commenced yesterday, following a ceremonious opening ceremony held at the National Gymnasium located along Mandela Avenue.
This year’s event holds special significance as it celebrates 31 years since the inaugural Windball tournament, named after the nation’s first and only female president; the tournament promises to be a celebration of sportsmanship, talent, and local unity. In another development, this will be the first time in the history of the competition that we will not see any team within the Georgetown district participating in the tournament.
Meanwhile, over the next few weeks, more than 25 schools, outside of Georgetown will compete passionately for championship glory in this prestigious tournament. This sporting extravaganza has become a hallmark event on the local school sports calendar.

In a significant geographical expansion, the tournament will welcome teams from as far as Region One (1). This not only demonstrates the tournament’s growing influence but also highlights its ability to attract participants from diverse regions, showcasing the unifying power of sports.
The opening ceremony witnessed a grand ceremonial march-past, featuring the participation of 25 enthusiastic schools. This colourful spectacle marked the official commencement of the 2023 School Girls Windball championship and set the stage for a thrilling series of matches.

The event was also graced with the presence of distinguished guests, including the Minister of the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Charles Ramson Jr; Director of Sports, Steve Ninvalle; and Cheteram Ramdial of the National Sports Commission.
During their opening remarks, Ninvalle and Ramdial both emphasized the significance of this programme and extended their heartfelt gratitude to tournament organizer, A. Munroe, for his invaluable contribution to the tournament’s continued success.

In a momentous announcement during his featured address, Minister Ramson added a new dimension to the tournament’s appeal. He revealed that, in addition to the championship medals and prizes, both the winning and runner-up teams would receive an all-expense-paid group trip to Fort Zeelandia. This exciting excursion will include a guided tour of the historic site, allowing the young athletes to explore the museum, the fort itself, and immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of our nation’s history.
