Kaieteur News – A 16-year-old pedal cyclist died on Sunday morning following an accident involving a minibus at Jonestown, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Police identified the teenager as Varesh Mangal, of Lot 60 Good Hope, Mahaica. The accident occurred around 0730hrs.
The driver of the bus alleged that Mangal rode into his path along the roadway at Jonestown but relatives are saying otherwise.
Police said that the minibus, bearing registration BZZ 5553 and the pedal cyclist were both proceeding west along the southern driving lane of Jonestown Public Road when Mangal allegedly swerved right.
The bus could not slow down and the driver knocked Mangal off his bicycle. He was reportedly killed on the spot.
Mangal’s relatives alleged that the driver of the bus was speeding and they noted that he was racing along the roadway with another vehicle when he struck the teen off his bicycle.
Police have arrested the driver and conducted a breathalyzer test; he had no alcohol in his body.
Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
