By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur Sports – Another day dawned at the 19th Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile, but once again, Guyanese athletes found themselves just shy of securing a coveted medal position. In the domain of swimming, Aleka Persaud, a talented athlete, fell short of progressing to the subsequent round of the women’s 100m butterfly.

Nevertheless, amidst her performance, she etched her name in the annals of Guyana’s sporting history by resetting the national record for this event. At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, Persaud had achieved a remarkable feat by clocking a time of One Minute, 7.24 seconds (1:07.24), which marked a new national record.
Yet, when it came to the Pan Am Games in Chile, she elevated her performance even further, delivering a remarkable time of 1 minute and 5.75 seconds.Although her impressive effort secured her a top position in her preliminary heat, it proved just short of the threshold required to advance to the medal round.
Undeterred, Persaud’s journey continues, and today, she eagerly anticipates competing in the women’s 100m freestyle event.Meanwhile, in the arena of weightlifting, the Guyanese representatives, Krystol Chanderban and Shammah Noel, confronted their aspirations with unwavering determination at the Gimnasio Chimkowe.
Chanderban, contending in the Women’s 59kg category, garnered a respectable 15th-place finish, while Noel’s performance mirrored Chanderban’s outcome as he secured a similar standing in the men’s 89kg division.
Shifting our focus to the boxing ring, Joel Williamson faced a formidable opponent in the form of the Dominican Republic’s Miguel De La Cruz during the Men’s 89kg round-of-16 bout, held at the Centro de Entrenamiento Olímpico.
Unfortunately, the bout concluded with a 5-0 defeat for Williamson. However, his journey may have ended, but the aspirations of Guyana for a boxing medal still stand, with all eyes on Keevin Allicock, who is set to compete in the quarterfinals of the men’s 57kg division against the American contender Jahmal Harvey.
Raekwon Noel, who had previously demonstrated an impressive performance in the Men’s 400m freestyle, is poised for another appearance in the aquatic arena, this time diving into the challenging waters of the men’s 800m freestyle event.
