Dear Editor,
A few days ago, a worker of the Demerara Harbour Bridge wrote to your newspaper to speak about the challenges we workers are facing. I want to say all that my brothers or sisters said was true. Bridge workers are facing hard times and everyday people are leaving the job because of the management. I believe that some in the management has no heart for the workers. The Human Resources Manager goes around and say she gets happiness when she can suspend and send home workers. What kind of manager is that?
Right now, the bridge bought two buses to transport workers and they are parked up most of the time. The only time they were used was when the span nine was changed. Since then, they are in the compound though millions were spent. The bridge also bought a truck to remove vehicles that weigh 22 tons. Editor, it is as if the people who bought it were not thinking. The bridge’s weight limit is 18 tons and anything over that requires a special crossing meaning the bridge has to be shut down. That truck is another white elephant. Right now, the bridge is renting a truck to do lifting and got a useless one parked up. I have to wonder what is in mind when they buy these things.
Editor, workers cannot talk since people twist things their own way. Our Union is with us, and I am glad they are here because the situation could be worse. But the Minister and the Government need to take a serious look at what is taking place at the Harbour Bridge before one day there is no experienced worker left.
Yours faithfully,
Concerned Worker
