Kaieteur Sports – The Berbice Cricket Board first division season got off to an exciting start across the county with sizeable crowds turning up at the venues. Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt flour, Albion, Tucher Park and Upper Corentyne advanced to the second round after recording victories while Port Mourant drew the bye in the first round. Law enforcement duties at the Berbice Expo resulted in the Berbice Police vs. Young Warriors match being postponed to next week. The top performers were Amazon Warriors Junior Sinclair with 5 for Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt and Jonathan Foo who scored 75 for Albion.
Playing at the Skeldon Ground, RHT Namilco defeated the home team by runs. Batting first RHT amassed 147 for 5 from their 20 overs. National Players Clinton Pestano top score with a responsible 40 while Matthews Pottaya 23, Jason Sinclair 32 and Jonathan Rampersaud 22 not out all chipped in with solid batting. Joshua Rasheed took 2 for 31 from 4 overs for Skeldon. Needing to score 148 from 120 balls on a very difficult pitch for batting, the home team were dismissed for 48 in 15 overs. Former Berbice Under 19 player Junior Sinclair took 5 wickets for 6 runs while national Under 19 spinner Jeremy Sundia took 2 for 6 (3 overs) Keon Sinclair, Jonathan Ramoersaud and Matthew Pottaya took a wicket a piece.
At the Blairmont Ground, a responsible innings of 75 by Foo led Albion to an 11 runs victory over the home team. Batting first, Albion amassed 161 for 5 with support coming from former West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon 26 and National wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble with 21. Berbice senior player Nigel Deodat took 3 for 35 from 4 overs while Seon Glasgow took one for 18 from 4 impressive overs. In response Deodat returned with the bat to score 67 while Jevin Jawalin and Farouk Subhan with twenty runs apiece as Blairmont fell short by 11 runs. Bowling for Albion were Guvrav Ramesh with 2 for 30 from 4overs while test player Devindra Bishoo took 1 for 30 for 4 overs.
At the Cotton Tree Ground, an attractive 58 from former national under19 all rounder Leon Swammy led Tucber Park to a 4 wicket win over West Berbice. Batting first West Berbice were restricted to 126 in 18.1 overs with Abul Ramsammy taking 3 for 5, Reuben Latcha 3 for 26, Zeymul Ramsammy 2 for 33 and Kwesi Mickle 1 for 19. In reply, Tucber Park reached 128 for 6 in 14.5 with Swammy 58 and Martin Singh 27 leading the way.
At the No. 69 Vikings Ground, Upper Corentyne crushed a youthful Rose Hall Canje team by 9 wickets. The visitors were bowled out for 45 in 18 overs with Berbice Youth Player Aviskhar Persaud top scoring with 17. Davenand Chanderpal took 3 for 2 and received support from P. Gobin and Omeshwar Mathura with 2 wickets apiece. In reply, Upper Corentyne raced to victory in 35 overs. Latchman Roopchan scored an unbeaten 25 as veteran left arm spinner Mark Sampson took the only wicket to fall.
Police and Young Warriors would play on Saturday with the winner playing Albion in the second round. Tucber Park would clash with Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt Flour at the Area ‘H’ Ground while Port Mourant would play Upper Corentyne at the Port Mourant ground on Saturday.
