Kaieteur Sports – The 2023 Farfan and Mendes and Woodpecker Products First Division Hockey Leagues continued on Sunday at the National Stadium in Providence. The day featured a pair of thrilling women’s matches and two intense contests in the men’s division.
In the day’s opening match, the Saints crossed sticks with YMCA Old Fort, and it was the Saints who grabbed an early advantage as Kalyra Scott capitalised on an opportunity in the 3rd minute. The two teams engaged in a fierce battle, with the Saints eager to extend their lead and Old Fort desperate to level the score. The high-paced clash concluded the first period with the Saints holding a narrow 1-0 lead.
The second period saw no additions to the score for either side, but the Saints maintained their 1-0 lead as they headed into the third period. In the third period, the Saints’ Nyanna Chase executed a spectacular field goal in the 42nd minute, pushing her team to a 2-0 lead.

Old Fort was awarded a penalty corner in the 54th minute, and their captain, Carolyn Deane, made no mistake, bringing the score to 2-1. However, the Saints’ defence held strong, preventing Old Fort’s women from scoring any more goals. The match concluded with a 2-1 victory for the Saints. In the other women’s fixture, GBTI GCC faced off against the Woodpecker Hikers. GCC Women put on a stellar defensive performance against a strong Woodpecker side, securing an impressive 2-0 victory.
Turning to the men’s division, the Pepsi Hikers fell to YMCA Old Fort with a score of 2-1, despite Robert France’s early goal in the 13th minute. Old Fort orchestrated a remarkable comeback, thanks to strikes from Shaquon Favorite in the 24th minute and Warren Williams in the 33rd minute.
The clash between Bounty GCC and the Saints concluded with a score of 2-1 in favour of GCC before the match was prematurely halted due to poor lighting conditions. GCC controlled the first two periods, finishing with a 1-0 lead heading into the third period. The third period saw both sides scoring one goal each before the match ended with 7 minutes and 40 seconds remaining.
The excitement continues at the same venue next Sunday, October 22nd, promising more thrilling action for hockey enthusiasts.
