Kaieteur Sports – The opening weekend of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and Women Football Association (WFA) Women’s League Division One witnessed an impressive display of football with a total of forty goals scored between the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC, Potaro Strikers and Guyana Police Force (GPF) FC.
In the first match on Saturday, Potaro Strikers controlled the game, maintaining 90% of possession during the first half. They adopted an ultra-attacking approach, led by Solomie Obermuller, Olivia Oselmo, and Tytheon Jones. By halftime, they were comfortably ahead with an 8-0 lead. Santos, missing three key players from their lineup, struggled to fend off the barrage of shots from the potent Potaro side.
The Strikers however continued their dominance in the second half, adding four more goals to their tally, securing a resounding victory for Bartica-based side. It was hat-trick galore as Oselmo netted goals in the 7th, 10th, and 35th minutes, Obermuller contributed with goals in the 2nd, 40th, and 55th minutes, while Jones also completed her hat-trick with goals in the 26th, 28th, and 42nd minutes. Latoya Williams (3′), Ovane Williams (9′), and Anis Livan (25′) each chipped in with a goal, sealing the emphatic victory for Potaro Strikers.
While in the other fixtures, Guyana Defence Force secured a dominant 13-0 victory against Fruta Conquerors with top scorer Glendy Lewis netting an astonishing five goals at the GFF National Training Centre (NTC) in Providence, East Bank Demerara. Abioce Heywood and Glengie Lewis also made a significant contribution with two goals each, while Yeneira Kenswil, Kellyann Niles, Odessa Romeo and Niomie Williams each scored one goal.
Meanwhile on Sunday, the excitement continued as another fifteen goals were scored in the match between Guyana Police Force Football Club and Pakuri Jaguars. GPF dominated the game with Jennell Edmonson, Melina Larson, and Akeelah Vancounten each scoring three goals, Shanic Thornhill and Lakeisha Williams adding two goals to the scoreline, while Angelisa Larson and Colette Rutherford contributed with one goal each.
“This marks an exceptional beginning for the Women’s League Division One. Fans can anticipate witnessing a remarkable level of competition over the coming weeks as teams strive to claim the title of the inaugural Women’s League Division One champions,” GFF noted.
