Waterfalls Magazine – A team of six from the Guyana Animation Network (GAN) will be given the unique opportunity to participate in the Caribbean Creative Pitch Accelerator for their creative animation television series scripts at the highly-anticipated Animae Caribe Animation and New Media Festival in Trinidad and Tobago from October 25 – 28, 2023.
According to a release from the GAN, from over 58 applications, GAN pre-submitted three animated series pitches which were shortlisted along with seven other regional projects for the Pitch Accelerator.
The festival, known for its dedication to showcasing the best animation and new media talent from the Caribbean and beyond, is the perfect stage for GAN to competitively expose its past students and team members to development opportunities, the entity said.
The team includes Xarielle Gittens, Siani Archer, Amelia Clover, Alleya Hamilton, Christopher Small, and Jubilanté Cutting.
The team will receive mentorship from UK development producer, Elliott Palmer and other experts for further development and for representation in the Animae Caribe 2024 Catalogue for global festival tours.
According to GAN, this unique opportunity not only showcases the team’s talent but also offers a platform to network with potential partners, investors, and collaborators, including industry giants like Disney and more.
Cutting, who was described as the driving force behind GAN, expressed her excitement for the upcoming festival, stating, “We are extremely grateful that all three of the projects we pre-submitted, in the Festival’s pitch submission round, were shortlisted out of over 58 other applications from the Caribbean for mentorship and further development. That is a remarkable achievement and is testament to the tremendous potential of Guyana’s animation industry and GAN’s training and development programmes.”
“We are immensely proud of our team and their hard work in crafting cultural creative animated series pitches that highlight Guyana as an ideal destination for multimedia storytelling based on our culture in the past, present and future… And we are even more thankful that through donor funding and support from our main investors, the Guyana Economic Development Trust (GEDT) and the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT) UK, we are able to sponsor the attendance of our team to the Festival to benefit and experience this achievement, ” Cutting added.
“I was extremely elated to see my name on the flyer as a shortlisted writer and my animated show being part of the Creative Pitch Accelerator. I look forward to learning more about animation as well as making impactful connections,” said one of the writers, Xarielle Gittens, on attending the Festival on behalf of GAN.
When asked about the opportunity to represent GAN at the Animae Caribe Festival, another writer, 23-year-old Siani Archer said, “The arts are my chosen home like they are for countless more, and GAN has provided a space to explore where the arts can take me further.”
Another member of the team, videographer, Christopher Small expressed that opportunities like these are good for Guyanese creators “because we will get to showcase the talents, hard work and passion for our craft and what our people have to offer.”
Clover, an international delegate and past student of GAN’s Writers Workshop, added, “I think this is a fantastic opportunity for Guyanese creators because it gives them the opportunity to meet professionals in the industry. Without living in LA [Los Angeles] or other animation hubs, it’s harder to get an understanding of how the industry works.”
The Guyana Animation Network said its involvement in the Animae Caribe Animation and New Media Festival promises to present a variety of opportunities for the Guyana contingent, comprised of passionate creators, storytellers and writers.
These opportunities include mentorship, further development of their projects, regional and international networking opportunities and more.
