Dear Editor,
In observance of World Mental Health Day 2023, it is vital that everyone, everywhere give some attention to this critical issue that often goes unnoticed: the emotional wellbeing of boys. This year, ChildLinK joins our Global partner, Family for Every Child’s mental health campaign which underscores the universal message that “Emotional wellbeing is a child’s right, and there are things we can all do to support it.”
In a society where traditional gender norms and expectations often dictate how boys should express their emotions, it is imperative that we reevaluate our approach to nurturing their emotional health.
Emotional wellbeing is a person’s capacity to experience, express, and regulate their emotions. It’s crucial to understand that emotional wellbeing doesn’t equate to endless happiness. Instead, it signifies that all children possess the tools necessary to navigate the countless emotions they encounter throughout their life.
Though the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child does not explicitly address emotional wellbeing, it is inherently tied to numerous articles within the convention. These articles encompass rights such as survival and development, respect for children’s views, freedom of expression, privacy, protection from violence and neglect, health, education, play, and recovery from trauma. Emotional wellbeing and mental health are integral aspects of a child’s overall health, firmly establishing emotional wellbeing as a child’s right, especially concerning their right to health and healthcare services.
Many of us may ask the question, why is emotional wellbeing important for boys, in particular? The answer is clear: emotionally well children, irrespective of gender, are more likely to develop strong and healthy minds, paving the way for better lives in the future. In a world where boys’ emotional wellbeing is ignored and they may feel pressured to suppress their emotions, emphasizing their emotional wellbeing becomes even more critical.
The first step to supporting boys’ emotional well-being is for adults to recognize the importance of their role in this process. Just as we prioritize a child’s physical health, nurturing their emotional health is equally vital. All adults in a boy’s life, including parents, other family members, teachers, and community members, play a pivotal role in fostering emotional wellbeing. Collaboration and communication are essential in this endeavor.
There exist numerous tools and strategies that adults can use to support boys in improving their emotional wellbeing, such as open conversations , active listening, and encouraging healthy emotional expressions. Making our homes, schools and communities where boys receive love, care, protection, security, and respect is paramount.
Societal norms, traditions and expectations can exert tremendous pressure on a boy’s emotional wellbeing, therefore, it is for adults everywhere to promote emotional wellbeing, and provide adequate care to boys to ensure that boys have the opportunity to thrive emotionally.
As Guyanese we can all engage in local initiatives which include reaching out to organizations to learn more about ways to support a boy’s emotional wellbeing or advocating for improved mental health services in schools and communities across the country. As we observe World Mental Health Day 2023, let’s talk about the emotional wellbeing of boys. By recognizing that emotional wellbeing is a fundamental right and taking proactive steps to support it, we can create a society where boys are empowered to express their emotions and ultimately lead happier, healthier lives.
Sincerely,
ChildLinK Inc.
