Dear Editor,
The continual heatwave that has resulted in power outages is quite ironic. Especially when you consider the extremely aggressive oil extraction process taking place just a short distance off of our shores. The hot air and hot gases being released come into the country thanks to our very dependable north eastern trade winds. The lack of consideration for the environment and those in it, has now resulted in unbearable heat where most of our citizens reside. This has caused the need to use more energy to cool down homes and working environments.
There must be a balance in the planning process. We are not in Saudi Arabia where their environment is already a desert with unbearable temperatures and a lack of incentive to enjoy the outdoors. We are in the tropics where nature and the outdoors have a maximum appeal to visitors and those living in the country. We must not give this up in preference for an aggressive energy extraction process which will have to be countered by high energy consumption to allow for our citizens to live comfortably. The only winners in such a game are the oil companies.
The oil extraction / production rate must be lowered and the extraction plan must consider the resulting localized temperature change that it will cause. Planning in accordance with such a reasonable environmental constraint will allow our citizens to enjoy both the beautiful outdoors in comfort, and the benefits of having an oil industry.
