Dear Editor,
The power outage fiasco is nothing short of shameful and disgraceful for the government and management of Guyana Power Light (GPL).
The lack of foresight and political gaming will not solve the problem. Putting aside the many weaknesses identified by the coalition, the PPP came to power with an ambitious infrastructure program on the back of oil money flowing in. Should it not ring the alarm bells the utilities infrastructure needs to match the physical infrastructure?
The President and Ministers globetrotting and inviting the world to come and invest, should they bring their own utilities? Guyana Water Inc (GWI) is not far away too, for weeks Diamond and many villages on the East Bank are out of water. These are heavily concentrated areas with housing and industrial development on going. Development is not an instrument to appease your supporters and win votes, it is a long plan that should be carefully thought of and implemented so the benefits can be yielded years to come. The quick fixes and dishing out contracts to friends and supporters will only band aid the wounds that will be resurfaced again as seen with many road projects.
It is my hope that the people in authority take a hard look at how we are spending tax-payers money. Too much spending and very little to show for it.
Yours truly,
S. James
