UDFA road to GFF Elite League
Kaieteur Sports – The ‘Road to Elite League’ of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) National Club Championship organised by the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) began last Sunday with a 2-1 win for Haynes and Lewis Winners Connection over Botafago, while there was a 0-0 stalemate when Net Rockers and Topp XX clashed in the opening game of the tournament at the Wisburg Secondary School ground in Wismar, Linden.
After failure by clubs to attend a General Council Meeting, the UDFA decided to stage a senior league for the rights to contest for a place in the GFF Elite League championship and four clubs were picked to vie for that lone slot to contest for a place at the National Club Level. The four clubs being Net Rockers, Topp XX, Winners Connection and Botafago were then placed in a round robin tournament format to arrive at the club to move on to the Elite League qualification contest.
While the opening game failed to get an outright winner as the Topp XX and Net Rockers game ended in a nil-all score, Winners Connection had a good result scoring a 2-1 victory against Botafago.
Both matches mirrored the fact that clubs in Linden were not getting the kind of ground preparation for competition needed and at times lacked purpose as they tried desperately to put together passes. The main playing facility is the Mackenzie Sports Club and this ground has been closed since late last year.
But while the first game was goalless, Nicholas Gentle netted twice for Winners Connection having banged home the lead for the eventual winners from a 20th minute strike but the tall Amaniki Buntin was able to notch in the one goal for Botafago twenty minutes later and the first half ended even with a 1-1 score.
Winners Connection were able to grab an early second half goal through Gentle who doubled his scoring in the 46th minute and this proved to be the winner for the Winners Connection who gained the full three points for that win they beat Botafago 2-1.
Topp XX and Net Rockers settled for as point each but Botafago gained no points for the loss.
Two more games are set for Sunday at the Wisburg Secondary School ground with game one at 6.00pm and the second at 8.00pm.
