GCB Senior Inter-County 50-Over tournament – Berbice vs. Essequibo
– (Anderson 57, Hetmyer 23, Shepherd 4-11, Joseph 2-16, Motie 32 & 1-10) Berbice /Demerara finals set
Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Amazon Warriors star players of the Berbice team came to the party yesterday as Kevlon Anderson hit a fifty while pacer Romario Shepherd snagged 4 wickets as part of an empathic win by 16 runs via Duckworth/Lewis Method against Essequibo.
Man-of-the-match Romario Shepherd accepts his trophy from GCB Operations Manager Anthony D’Andarde yesterday at Bourda.
Bourda Ground continued to attract fans as yesterday’s heavyweight battle was won by Berbice, mainly CPL 2023 champ Anderson who led the Ancient County side with a gritty 57 off 71, hitting 8 fours as he finally came into some form after a few mistrials.
But apart from contributions from Guyana Amazon Warriors teammates, Shimron Hetmyer (23) and Gudakesh Motie who had a cameo 32 from 26 balls, Berbice did well to even reach their total of 170-9 in 38.1 overs.
It was another good game with the ball for all-rounder Quentin Sampson who rocked the Berbicians with his 4-25, which was supported by the consistent skipper Anthony Adams (2-41), who led Essequibo’s bowling.
It turned out to be an uphill battle for Essequibo, as apart from a defiant 32 off 53 from senior wicket-keeper Kemol Savory, the Cinderella County boys misfired terribly; as they succumbed to the hostility of the Berbice pacers.
West Indies limited overs fast-bowler Romario Shepherd had an incredible opening spell, snatching 4-11 from only 4 overs roughing up the opposition batters, while the lively Shamar Joseph (2-16) and Clinton Pestano (1-22) added enough fuel to the fire.
Shepherd blew away the Essequibo top-order, before allowing fellow pacers in Joseph and Pestano to feast on a wounded unit, minus Savory.
Their skipper Adams (15), Sampson who had 11 runs from just 4 balls with a four and one six and a spirited Neiland Cadogan (19), tried to hang with Savory who managed 3 fours and a six, but instead fell victim to the pace barrage.
The spin duo of Kevin Sinclair (1-15) and Motie (1-10) wrapped up the innings in fine fashion as they prepare for the final round.
Taking first strike, Berbice lost their top 3 batsmen for under 10 runs each, but found some security in the arrival of Anderson who made amends for his previous failures.
Accompanied by his Guyana Amazon Warriors teammate, Shimron Hetmyer who was aggressive, hitting a pair of fours and a six in his 23 off 22 balls, Anderson settled more into his innings.
The pair put on 38 before Hetmyer was bowled by Sampson, but Anderson progressed and reached his fifty off 62 deliveries but continued to lose partners at a fast rate.
Another of his Amazon Warriors teammates, Motie then flexed his guns as he muscled 3 sixes and 2 fours before being sadly run out thanks to exceptional glovework from Savory.
Permaul (11) and Joseph (15) were the backend primary scorers who took Berbice to a reasonable score, in a match which rested in the hands of mother nature.
