Kaieteur Sports – Once again, in the schools that golf was available as a PE elective, Rosignol Secondary under the guidance of Sir Kevon Jawahir led the nation with 100% pass rate (93% at Grade I). While students are required to each do 3 sports for CSEC PE and Sport, Golf was the one they chose to do as their external exam.
In fact, the numbers of students who added golf to their chosen sport increased from 116 on 2022 to 286 in 2023. Based on the level of interest from additional schools, it is expected that over 600 students will participate in CSEC PE Golf in 2024.
Rosignol Secondary was joined by students from Bush Lot, Queens College, President’s College, Bartica, Friendship, Anna Regina, Aurora and Cottonfield Secondary schools in adding golf as a PE elective and external exam for CSEC.
What is of great significance is that the teaching methods being applied that is gaining such incredible results were exclusively developed by Master Coach Aleem Hussain and the Nexgen Golf Academy in partnership with the Ministry of Education Unit of Allied Arts, without any access or use of a golf course, yet there’s a drastic disparity in Guyana’s successful pass rate versus other countries with multiple golf courses.
Golf has grown in popularity over the past few years due to the dedicated push by the Guyana Golf Association and Master Coach Aleem Hussain to ensure that thousands of persons are given access to try the sport.
In addition, dozens of major companies have lent their support to create a pathway for all Guyanese to experience the game for the first time. Innovative use of tournaments using a shortened version of the game has led to a wider and more diverse audience, with a similar vision now being pursued by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
According to Hussain, “Golf can be the most rewarding or frustrating game. But it’s simply a game of repetition, 3, 4 and 5 shot holes played around various challenges and obstacles. We simplify the game to make it fun and our players only have to adapt to course conditions once they understand how to hit a ball properly. We guarantee that anyone, regardless of physical ability, will be able to do so in less than 15 minutes of instruction!”
The Nexgen Golf Academy, open to the public, is a centrally located, lighted driving range and practice facility on the Scout Association Ground, Woolford Avenue Georgetown. Friendly and knowledgeable coaching staff are always ready to make your golfing experience a great one. Call 645-0944 for reservations or stop by any day of the week.
