– Pakistan, Canada & Hong Kong also register wins
Kaieteur Sports – WI O40s Captain Narsingh Deonarine won the toss and decided to take first strike against the mighty Aussies in their first matchup in the O40s Cricket Global Cup at the Karachi Gymkhana ground.
Prior to the start of the match, both teams observed a minute’s silence in honor of the recent death of renowned Guyanese cricketer, Fazil Sattaur.
Batting first, our Windies O40s Masters’ rattled up a formidable 267/7 off their 45 overs. Former West Indies batsman, Narsingh Deonarine top scored with a polished 65 off 76 balls with 5 @4s and 2 @ 6s and teamed up with former GCC & Everest batsman, Javed Bacchus to rescue WI after they were precariously poised at 66 for 3 after 11.2 overs. The pair put on 115 runs 144 balls to lay the foundation for their eventual total. Javed Bacchus contributed a well composed 61 off 82 balls which innings was peppered with 10 @4s.
Earlier, the Windies masters lost BMC centurions, Hemraj Garbarran without scoring, and Devon Clements for 12. Opener Randy Thomas was looking good for 43 off 41 balls with 6 @ 4s and a solitary maximum until he lost his wicket via the LBW route. There was another mini collapse after Narsingh exited at 181 for 4 which quickly became 195 for 6 as Windies lost both Javed Bacchus and Shazan Babwah in quick succession. Another former West Indies player, Mahendra Nagamootoo (27 off 16 balls) then joined forces with Trinidadian Dary Balgobin (42 off 27 balls) where they put together 65 invaluable runs in 6.3 overs. The pick of the bowlers for the Aussies was Mark Leard finished with 4 for 56 off his 9 overs.
Australia also stuttered in their run chase by reaching 53 for 3 after 9.2 overs. Caotain Justin Poole joined Tim Bott adding 62 runs for the 4th wicket and was looking to threaten the Windies score but faltered after they lost them both to suffer a mini collapse to quickly become 142 for 7. Aussies eventually folded for 183. Shazan Babwah grabbed 3 for 28 whilst Sanjiv Gooljar took 2 for 36. Narsingh Deonarine was eventually named as the Man of the match.
In other matches, Canada held their nerve to outwit the UAE. Batting first, UAE was bowled out for 181 in 39.3 overs. Canada overcame the score for the loss of 8 wickets.
Pakistan rode their luck to come out victorious in a thriller against the USA. USA made an imposing 250 all out in 44.3 overs. Pakistan reached their target for the loss of 9 wickets.
Hong Kong made light work of Nepal. Nepal were bowled out for 105 and Hong Kong got there for the loss of 2 wickets.
