COURTS Optical Pee Wee U11 Tournament…
Kaieteur Sports – Yesterday in the boardroom of the National Library, representatives of the teams participating in the tenth edition of the Unicomer-sponsored Pee Wee Under-11 Football Championship were given the customary tournament briefing ahead its commencement which is slated for Saturday, September 23.
Branded the ‘COURTS Optical Pee Wee U-11 Tournament’ for the first time after proudly being anticipated for nine editions as the COURTS Pee Wee U-11 Tournament, Co-Director of the organising team, Troy Mendonca, believes this milestone-event will be an intriguing one.
The 32 teams that will compete for this year’s title as well as the fixtures have all been finalised by the Petra Organisation and features six weekends of action all billed to take place at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground on Carifesta Avenue.
Those teams will be divided into eight groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Round-of-16 knockout stage. Only the quarterfinalists will remain to round out the top eight.
The tournament’s winner will cart off the Championship trophy, gold medals and uniforms, the second-place side will leave with a trophy, silver medals and balls while the third-place finisher will collect a trophy, bronze medals and balls. There will also be the usual individual prizes up for grabs.
At the briefing, all teams were presented with two official-sized balls to assist in their preparation for the event.
COURTS’ Optical Chain Manager, Richard Simpson, who was present at the event, said his company is quite pleased to once again be a part of the grassroots development programme.
He said, “We play a major role as it relates to the development of the community and for me in particular, I believe the children are our future and in order to have a brighter future for such a wonderful country such as Guyana, we need to direct them down the right path.”
“Petra has taken a bold step in saying, ‘We have a way to get it done’ and we strongly believe it is a great way. So our key focus is on skill development.”
Simpson went on to acknowledge the dedicated teachers that will take it upon themselves to organise their respective teams for the event.
Enterprise Primary School is the current champion after they claimed the title of the ninth edition in 2022 with a 2 – 1 victory over former Champion, St. Pius, in the finale.
The teams that will compete in this edition of the tournament are: Georgetown – Sophia, Redeemer, FE Pollard, North Ruimveldt, Marian Academy, Winfer Gardens, St. Pius, West Ruimveldt, Tucville, Enterprise, St. Ambrose and St. Stephens.
