Kaieteur Sports – Former Berbician wicket-keeper batsman, Abdul Fazil Sattaur, also known as Fazil Samad, passed away on September 18, 2023, at the age of 58. Fazil Samad, a dynamic top-order batsman, had the privilege of representing both Guyana and Canada in the beautiful sport of cricket. He was born on April 6, 1965, in the historic county of Albion, Berbice.
In 1995, Sattaur, the aggressive right-handed batsman, relocated to Canada. He made his international debut for Canada on February 11, 2003, in a match against Bangladesh at Durban during the 2002-03 ICC World Cup. Furthermore, he was among several Canadian players who possessed first-class cricket experience, having made 10 appearances for Berbice and Guyana between 1984 and 1990.
Sattaur was known for his penchant for attacking strokes, swiftly accumulating runs against loose bowling. He also displayed his wicket-keeping skills on numerous occasions and dabbled in off-spin bowling. His highest-scoring first-class innings was an impressive 94-run knock during the 1989 Jones Cup match between Berbice and Demerara.
Although Sattaur missed out on representing Canada in the 2001 ICC Champions Trophy, he made his mark when he joined the national team for the 2001 Americas Cup. He emerged as Canada’s top run-scorer in that tournament, notching up two half-centuries. He also participated in the 6 Nations Challenge in Namibia, although he faced challenges with the bat, amassing only 51 runs in four innings. He also played a role in Canada’s 2002 Red Stripe Bowl campaign, achieving modest success. Later, he represented the Cavaliers Sports Club in the Toronto and District League, concluding the 2002 season with an outstanding record of over 1000 runs at an impressive average of 93, including four brilliant centuries.
Fazil Sattaur is mourned by his four daughters and son. His funeral will take place today (September 20) at 1:30 pm at the International Muslim Organizer located at 65 Rexdale Boulevard, Etobicoke, just on the outskirts of Toronto, Canada.
