Kaieteur Sports – Romello Crawford was unstoppable as he defended his crown to once again ride away with the annual Eon Amsterdam birth Anniversary cycle road race in Berbice.
Crawford who hails from Fyrish, Corentyne, Berbice, won in a time of 55 minutes 20 seconds.
The race, which was held last Sunday, was for riders in Region 5 and 6 and saw the cyclists covering 10 laps around the town of New Amsterdam. Some 16 riders took to the starting line.
The event which was started by Mayor of New Amsterdam Wayne Wright McIntosh saw the riders taking off from Republic Road and Charles Place, turned left into Vryheid Street, left into Main Street, left into Philadelphia Street/ High Bridge, left into Republic Road for 10 laps.
Crawford, a national cyclist, rode home ahead of Arjune Sookai with Mario Washington coming third. The evergreen Junior Niles was fourth with Andrea “Padlock” Green riding home fifth.
Niles was the top veteran on show with Jaikarran Arjune second and Myron Rose third. The top juvenile was Sidwell Sandy who won from Jeremy Callender.
Semone Sandy won in the female category.
Crawford was so dominant that to rode away with 6 of the eight sprint prizes with Niles and Sookai taking one each. A special prize was presented to 72 years old Daniel Rigby for being the oldest participant and for completing the event.
Amsterdam, who hails from Berbice, is a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police. He was an ardent participant as well as a fan of sports. He served as traffic Chief and Commandant of the Felix Austin Training School and Commander of Berbice and other areas before retiring from the force.
Mayor McIntosh along with members of Amsterdam’s family was on hand to assist with the distribution of the prizes which included cash, trophies and other memorabilia.
The event was organized by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) and coordinated by long serving National Coach Randolph Roberts.
This is the third event that has been sponsored by Amsterdam. The first was at his retirement. Amsterdam plans to make the event an annual affair.
