Kicks off September 23 at MoE Ground
Kaieteur Sports – The 2023 edition of the COURTS Guyana-sponsored Pee Wee Under-11 Schools Football Championships was officially launched yesterday in the board room of the sponsor, at the main branch located on Main Street.
Once again organised by Guyana’s top grassroots football administrator, the Petra Organisation, the decade-milestone tournament will, for the first time, be branded under COURTS Optical – A brand of Unicomer.
The significant ceremony was attended by Courts Optical Chain Manager, Richard Simpson, Petra Co-Director, Troy Mendonca, Guyana Football Federation Technical Director, Bryan Joseph, and the Ministry of Education’s Head of Allied Arts, Nicholas Fraser.
In Medonca’s brief remarks, he stated that the occasion was a momentous one since it is the celebration of a 10-year partnership. He said, “I think it is fitting to recognise the role of this institute (Unicomer), which played a great role in the birth of the Petra Organisation and the role we play in developing grassroots football over the past decade.”
The Co-Director also acknowledged those who have continued to support the tournament over the years, which he believes is a testament to the value of the event that has seen current national players transition through the years.
Simpson said, “Ten years is not something simple to look over. It is showing that there is opportunity and that there is a bright future for the tournament.”
“Unicomer, who is also celebrating 30 years in Guyana this year, will also celebrate this 10-year partnership with efforts toward developing the community and a path to nurture young talent to be a lasting positive impact.”
“Courts Guyana – a brand of Unicomer, has been deeply committed to social good and our partnership with Petra aligns perfectly with Courts Optical.”
He continued: “As the official sponsor of the Pee Wee tournament, we will continue to grow the tournament to the best of our ability and ensure that there is a continuous future for this programme. As we expand over the years, we are making a commitment to the Petra Organisation to ensure we facilitate this partnership and ensure that we have a sustainable programme and we develop the youth of Guyana and ensure that we can build a good path for them and facilitate future growth.”
At the launch, it was disclosed that a total of 32 Schools will be vying for the Pee Wee title from September 23 to October 28, with all matches being played at the Ministry of Education Ground on Carifesta Avenue.
The teams will be divided into eight groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Round-of-16 knockout stage. Only the quarterfinalists will remain to round out the top eight.
The tournament’s winner will cart off the Championship trophy, gold medals and uniforms, the second-place side will leave with a trophy, silver medals and balls while the third-place finisher will collect a trophy, bronze medals and balls. There will also be the usual individual prizes up for grabs.
