Dear Editor,
It was embarrassing to see the reception given to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar. His Highness is the Monarch and the Head of State of a Country. He is also the guarantor of their constitution. What was more important than receiving His Highness? Where was the President of Guyana? The impression given was that the President and his boss, the general secretary of the PPPC, had sent everyone else of lower rank to receive a reigning Monarch.
The school children were there in uniform, and the ministers were also there in uniform attire, with two notable exceptions. The Minister of Finance and the Minister of Education seem to be operating as though they can make their own rules and leave the toeing of the line to their ‘junior’ peers. The ministers in uniform attire looked very professional and organized. They conveyed confidence in Guyana as a place for foreign investment. These ministers, the GDF and the school children were the highlight for Guyana at the reception for His Highness at the airport. You all made Guyanese feel proud. The teamwork amongst the ‘junior’ peers was evident.
The lack of attendance of a significant couple of members of the government, and the out of sync or ‘own way’ dress of another couple of ministers left the impression that they were above all others in attendance. Even the Prime Minister was in sync with the larger team.
Not too long ago, the two notable missing attendees had to be reminded that they too had to follow the rules of the imposed COVID-19 curfew. This occurred when photos of them fishing during the imposed COVID-19 curfew were seen on Facebook.
We must remember and remind others that no one is above the rules, nor is anyone to snub other leaders of a country. Maybe there was a life-threatening emergency that prevented their attendance at the reception. But if not, their presence would have been more in line with our nation’s high standards of hospitality. We must remember the importance of our guests.
It was very disappointing to see what appeared to be the snub of a Monarch’s arrival into our beautiful country. We must try to make amends for this during the Amir’s visit. The lesson of the need for the Marriott Hotel has not been forgotten.
Sincerely,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
