Kaieteur Sports – In what was viewed as an intense and fiercely competitive tournament, veteran scrabble player, James Krakowsky, shrugged aside consecutive defeats to Moen Gafoor at two preceding tournaments to finally take the helm on the podium when the nation’s top scrabble players convened for a senior championship at Flava’s, Charlotte Street Georgetown, last Saturday afternoon.
Krakowsky amassed a flawless 6 points and a positive spread of 586, while Gafoor was relegated to the second-place slot with 4 points and a positive spread of 709. Curtis Liverpool continued his climb among the elite players when he replicated the feat of being among the top finishers. He managed to compile a similar number of points as Gafoor but with a slightly lower spread of 634 to seal off the podium positions.
Krakowsky took care of Jonathan Subrian by a commanding spread of 182 in the first sitting and by lunch had registered victories over Kamta Ramnarine (170) and Gafoor (8). He continued his dominance in the post-lunch session at the expense of Winslow Jacobs (340), Colin Chichester (113), and Leon Belony (78).

Gafoor defeated Liverpool (112), Ovid Williams (214), Colin Chichester (122), and Winslow Jacobs (208) but conceded his 3rd and 4th sitting games to Leon Belony (42) and Krakowsky (8).
Meanwhile, Belony managed to stay in the limelight after clinching the trophy for compiling the most bingos (16). Wayne Cave received a special prize for scoring the most points outside of a bingo (86), Christine Basil finished with 3 points and a positive spread of 313 and was awarded a trophy for the Best Emerging Player. Marshal Karamchand was awarded US$20 donated by the Amerindian community, for spelling the word ‘Nations’ while Cave won a special necklace donated by Nelisha Johnson for his feat of registering the most points outside a bingo.
Michael Benjamin also registered 3 points but failed to be among the podium finishers by dint of a lower spread. He was awarded a special trophy for his high level of consistency.
The organizers have announced that the next tournament is scheduled for September 23 and urged the players to continue practicing in order to improve on their respective games. Approximately 12 players had competed for top honours.
